Nano Nagle Feast Dayhttp://www.stelizabeths.qld.edu.au/Events and Activities/Pages/Sport-News.aspxNano Nagle Feast Day
Service is central to our own call as Christians and is an important part of our school ethos and charism. Both St Elizabeth and Nano Nagle were women who served those in need, and it is from these two remarkable women that our school takes inspiration. This week, we particularly celebrate the gifts of Nano Nagle, founder of the Presentation Sisters, whose feast day is Thursday, 26th April.

This year is particularly significant as it marks 300 years since the birth of Nano in 1718. She dedicated her life to educating children in a time of harsh penal laws. She then spent evenings travelling the streets by the light of her lantern to visit the homeless and sick. This saw Nano become known as the Lady of the Lantern. The lantern became a symbol of God’s love and hope for a better future and is a significant symbol in our school. Just as Nano followed God’s call to action, the lantern is our guiding light, reminding us that we too are called to respond through service to others.

Social justice initiatives are one significant way, we as a school, respond to the call to serve those in need. As we have done for many years, support this term will be offered to Micah Projects who work to assist the homeless of Brisbane. On Thursday, Margie Gamble from Micah Projects will be coming to speak with the Year 6 students, sharing details about their program that provides backpacks for children displaced due to domestic violence, natural disasters and economic pressures. Throughout this term, we will collect items to support their endeavours. Items required for the backpacks include:

• Pyjamas
• Cuddly toy and/or book/colouring activity
• Toothbrush and toothpaste
• Hairbrush
• Small torch
• Underpants x 2
• Change of clothes
• Drink bottle
• Lunchbox (No food).

Donations of the above items will help us put together backpacks to brighten the day of children in need. Our Year
6 students will coordinate the collection of items and speak with younger students throughout the term to explain the significance of their donation. All items must be new and can be for children of any age. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
